We’re incredibly proud of all our schools for getting involved in this year’s Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival

On Friday 9th January, the festivities kicked off at the primary schools who were luck to receive a visit from local folk musician Kathryn Johnstone for a special Straw Bear assembly.

Kathryn played her accordion whilst some of the pupils performed their Molly dancing. The children also had a chance to get close to various instruments and hear all about the Straw Bear traditions.

SHSCC were delighted to welcome professional storyteller and folklorist Patrick Ryan.
Our Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic session listening to traditional folk tales brought to life through Patrick’s storytelling. A selected group also took part in a hands-on workshop, learning the craft for themselves, and were especially captivated by his demonstration of how to make a magic chicken!

On Saturday, Molly dancers from Park Lane and New Road took part in the parade,  the groups performed with confidence and joy, representing the schools beautifully.

Many festival-goers commented on how delightful it was to see young dancers taking part and helping keep this important piece of local heritage alive.

A huge well done to everyone who helped play a part in keeping this much-loved tradition alive!

The Straw Bear Festival is one of Whittlesey’s most loved traditions, with roots dating back to the 19th century. Celebrating local history, folklore, and community, it was wonderful to see such an important part of the festival shared with our pupils and students.

Thank you to the Straw Bear Festival Charity for making these special visits to our schools possible.
